A Welcome From The President

Welcome to the NSW Young Lawyers website. You can read all about our recent highlights, events to diarise and items of importance below.

What's been happening?
Over the past few months we have continued to make detailed submissions to government, plan our first-class CLE programme, work on updates to our publications and ensure our Committee members are apprised of the latest news in their particular areas of practice. The NSW Young Lawyers Council has also recently adopted an Email Policy, which will govern the content of all NSW Young Lawyers-related email communications from now into the future. We have also recently held the following events:

  • A public forum entitled "The Legal Profession: Myth versus Reality", to be held at the Metcalfe Auditorium in the State Library on 27 August 2008, hosted by Richard Ackland;
  • the Young Professionals Ball, which was held on 6 September 2008. The Ball was a sell-out, with over 300 attendees from various professions. The Ball also featured fantastic prizes and displays from our sponsors, including Carpe Diem, Swaab Attorneys, Aston Martin, Farage, Industrie, Roses Only and others. If you missed out this year, make sure you get your tickets quickly for next year's Ball!;
  • the annual NSW Young Lawyers State of the Profession address on 18 September 2008, which this year was delivered by the Hon Justice R McColl AO, Justice of the NSW Court of Appeal and NSW Young Lawyers 2008 Patron.
  • Upcoming events
    There are a number of upcoming events that you should diarise now. First, the Environmental Law Committee will be presenting its first Land and Environment Court Moot on 8 October 2008. For more details, refer to the flyer for the event.

    Secondly, the Environmental Law Committee are bringing back their ever-popular annual Trivia Night on 13 November 2008. For more details, refer to the flyer for this event.

    Finally, this year NSW Young Lawyers will proudly host the National Golden Gavel and Australian Young Lawyer Awards on behalf of the Law Council of Australia. The Gavel and Awards will commence at 7.30 am on Friday, 21 November 2008 at the Four Seasons Hotel. Further details and information on how you can purchase tickets are available in the event flyer.

    About NSW Young Lawyers

    If you are a law student, a solicitor or a barrister in either your first 5 years of practice, or under the age of 36 years, you are automatically a Member of NSW Young Lawyers. Although membership of NSW Young Lawyers is not contingent on membership of the Law Society of NSW, we could not do what we do without their help and support.

    Being an active participant in NSW Young Lawyers brings important benefits to you, the profession and the community. In particular, involvement allows you to give something back, both to the profession and the community at large, and an opportunity for you to fulfil your duty to be socially responsible, to recognise the privileged position you are in and the fact that you have the ability to make a difference.

    If you are interested in getting involved or would like to find out more about us, our upcoming events, Committee activities or projects, please feel free to explore the various links across our website. In addition, if you have any suggestions in relation to our website or about how NSW Young Lawyers can provide additional benefits or opportunities to its Members, please feel free to contact me by email at president@younglawyers.com.au.
